Can Working Border Collies Thrive In Colder Climates?

Yes! Border Collies can get any job done in colder climates, and it can even boost their performance. They are naturally equipped to handle cooler temperatures, which makes them the perfect work companions no matter the area they are needed.

A Breed Prepared For Cold Weather

The Border Collie originated in Scotland and England and were bred for herding sheep in harsh climates. The climates in these areas are known for being cold and wet, which has affected how this breed has adapted to these conditions. Border Collies are inherently intelligent with stamina and physical resilience. Over the years, they developed a thick coat to help protect them from rain and snow while also keeping them warm. They are a breed that loves to work, and their heritage has helped prepare them to be able to do any job in any condition.

A Double Coat Designed To Protect In Any Climate

Border Collies have a double coat that helps keep them dry and warm during the colder months. Their overcoat is made up of longer and coarser hair that can repel water and protect them from the wind. The undercoat is a dense layer that keeps them warm and their body temperature at a good level. When the weather starts to get warmer, dogs will shed their undercoat to help regulate their body temperature. It is important to regularly groom your dog to help maintain the health of their coat. This will help ensure that their coats work as intended in any climate.

Working Hard Keeps Them Warm

When dogs are working hard, their bodies generate heat. Keeping them moving will help keep them warm. Border Collies are constantly on the move, which is what helps them succeed in colder climates. They are a high-drive dog that is built for endurance in any condition. Their natural stimulation will keep them healthy throughout the year so you have a strong dog who is ready to get the job done at any time.

How You Can Keep Your Border Collie Comfortable

While Border Collies are capable of operating in colder climates, there are still steps you can take to help keep them comfortable and safe. Providing your dog with an insulated shelter outside will keep them dry and warm when they are spending long periods outdoors. It is important to make sure that this space is draft-free so your dog's overcoat has the chance to fully dry. Getting your Border Collies regularly groomed will help keep them clean and comfortable. If you do not do this, their hair may mat, which can be very painful. When the seasons start to change, helping them shed their undercoat will keep them cool and make them more agile. After a long day outside in the rain or snow, help your dog by drying them off with focus on wiping off their paws and in between their toes. It is always important to make sure your dog is staying hydrated at all times. Make sure your dog has access to fresh, clean, unfrozen water throughout the day. Lastly, work with your vet to make sure your dog is receiving the correct dietary needs during the colder months. Their diet may change based on the amount of work they are doing throughout the year. Working with a specialist will help you make sure your dog is getting the right nutrition and the perfect amount of protein that will keep them strong and healthy.

The Warning Signs of Stress

Though Border Collies are built for work, they are not immune to stress. It is important to know the warning signs of frostbite or hypothermia in dogs. Knowing the signs of stress in dogs can help you prevent serious health issues. If you notice your dog is repeatedly lifting their paws outside, this may be a sign that your dog is too cold. Frostbite can affect the ears, tail, nose, and paws of dogs. If you see signs of pale or blueish skin or any swelling on your dog, you may want to consult a vet. If your dog is constantly licking or chewing at a specific area for a long period of time, take the time to assess the area and look for signs of frostbite. If your dog is experiencing hypothermia, they may be shivering, lethargic, or whining constantly. It is important to pay close attention to your dog on days that have extreme conditions. If you have any doubts, bring your Border Collie in, dry them off, and help them warm up slowly. Being proactive and watching out for signs of stress will help keep your dog safe and in good health all year round.

Border Collies Thrive Year-Round

Border Collies thrive in any condition that you put them in. These dogs are capable of doing any job no matter the weather. Their coat allows them to adapt to their surroundings, and their good attitudes make them the best partners around. With the right attention and care, your Border Collie can help you all winter long.
