How Do Experienced Dogs Mentor Younger Working Dogs?

How an Older Dog Naturally Mentors Young Dogs

In the wild, animals with similar pack mentalities provide clear examples of how social learning works. Wolves learn how to hunt, howl, communicate, and how to navigate the sometimes complicated social structure of the pack. Young dogs show similar behaviors when spending time around more mature dogs. During our training regimen, we incorporate mentor dogs to provide a dependable example for the young dogs. Social training lets young dogs directly participate in the experience. Having them work on training alongside another well-trained dog gives them a visual and social example of how to behave. Continue reading to learn more about the techniques we use to professionally train Border Collies to be perfect work dogs.

Instinct Drives Puppies to Learn from Older Dogs

Instincts cause puppy dogs to mimic older dogs without having to directly train them in specific acts. This can be something as simple as using a dog door to go relieve themselves, or more nuanced behaviors like social etiquette. This sort of dog training does have limits. A dog will not likely learn specific commands or how to properly complete jobs they’re tasked with without any formal training. Observation will help guide dogs during training, but working with a professional trainer gives the puppies a more structured preparation for their future homes. We utilize all possible methods of training during a dog’s time in our Border Collie Program. When we utilize observational training, we only bring highly trained dogs around the dogs in training. This sort of mimic behavior isn’t limited to positive behaviors, and a misbehaving dog may pass along less desirable behaviors. Kuykendall’s Border Collies Program focuses on raising and training high-quality working dogs that can sharply focus on tasks and listen to commands without hesitation.

Training Dogs Through Observational Learning

Putting all of the training and experience of an older dog on display gives younger dogs a boost to learn and adapt in new scenarios quickly. Limits in observational learning do require formal training techniques to be utilized. We make sure each dog gets a significant amount of hands-on training to teach them social cues, commands, and overall proper behavior. Border Collies are intelligent, loving, and loyal animals and are a very trusted dog. A dog with such high intelligence and work ethic is driven to finish tasks assigned to them, making them an excellent choice for goose dogs, farm dogs, and other areas of work.

Dogs Learn by Imitating Older Dogs

Young dogs learn the boundaries of playing, natural communication, and how to interact with humans around them by being around an adult dog. Oftentimes, interaction with a puppy can be chaotic and include unwanted jumping, overly excited nibbling, and high energy. With a mentor around them, an adult dog offers a clear example of how they should act. A fully trained adult dog will calm down and wait respectfully to be approached. Having a younger dog witness this behavior will teach them the proper way to greet others.

When training work dogs, recall training is a pivotal behavior trait not only for the dog’s safety, but to reduce liability for the owners. Any owner should be able to successfully recall livestock dogs and goose dogs at any moment, no matter the circumstances. At the Kuykendall’s farm, we ensure every puppy is raised and trained to follow commands without hesitation during the workday, and we start this training at a young age. By incorporating older dogs into their daily lives and training sessions, our Border Collies excel throughout our training program.

Clear Benefits of Older Dogs in Training

Over years of training and working with a dog, they have acquired a lot of nuanced skills. Fully trained dogs can pick up on social cues, understand boundaries, have built trust, and have spent years dedicated to following their training. There are a lot of nuanced aspects of dog training that dogs learn over time, but a dog mentor can guide younger trainees in life lessons, social behavior, and more. Part of training dogs is building trust with the dog. A younger puppy witnessing an adult trusting the dog trainers is a big step and can provide them with the feeling of safety and protection. A puppy that feels safe in its environment will more easily embrace its training. An experienced dog will instill confidence during the early stages of dog training. Any established trainer understands that older dogs are natural leaders to young dogs and can quickly guide young puppies through basic rules and social cues.

Does Social Learning Speed up Training of a Young Dog?

Social learning involves puppies learning from other dogs that are well-trained. Oftentimes, a senior dog will naturally act as a mentor that guides puppies through normal everyday activities. Improved social skills keep dogs and the people around them safer. Watching older, well-trained dogs interact with other dogs provides them with an example of behavior in unique scenarios. When an older work dog meets other animals, it needs to feel secure and maintain composure. Young dogs may become anxious and nervous around unfamiliar dogs and other animals, causing them to lash out in fear. By watching an adult dog handle these interactions maturely, the young dog will approach interactions differently. One of the clear benefits of social learning is helping dogs to become more trainable. Young dogs more easily pick up on commands when they are exposed to the behavior of an older mentor that has undergone expert training.

Social interactions and new environments may be stressful for an inexperienced puppy. By witnessing the calm and relaxed attitude of the older Border Collie, a younger dog being trained will mimic the same energy levels when interacting with strangers and visitors. In general, training a young dog around older ones improves behavior and helps puppies to understand social cues. This early age behavior development fast-tracks them to the next stage of training, allowing us to spend even more time on advanced training. When mentored by an older Border Collie, social learning occurs naturally.
